Trip Overview

Upper Mustang & Sky Caves – A Journey into the Forbidden Kingdom

The Upper Mustang region, often called the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” is one of Nepal’s most mystical destinations. Hidden behind the majestic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Mustang was once part of the ancient Tibetan empire, preserving a rich cultural heritage that remains largely untouched by modernity.

The trek to Upper Mustang takes travelers through arid landscapes, deep gorges, and stunning rock formations, leading to Lo Manthang, the walled capital of this ancient kingdom. Here, visitors can explore ancient monasteries, traditional white-washed houses, and experience the unique Tibetan-influenced lifestyle of the locals.

One of the most intriguing attractions of Upper Mustang is the Sky Caves of Mustang—a network of over 10,000 man-made caves carved into cliffs. These caves, some dating back over 2,000 years, were used as meditation chambers, burial sites, and living quarters. Archaeologists have discovered ancient manuscripts, murals, and even human remains inside them, offering insights into Mustang’s mysterious past.

This trek is not just an adventure but a journey through time, revealing an ancient civilization hidden in Nepal’s remote Himalayan landscapes. With its dramatic scenery, deep-rooted history, and spiritual significance, Upper Mustang and the Sky Caves offer an unforgettable experience for explorers seeking something truly unique.
