Originally, several hundred years ago the Tamang people came from Tibet as horse traders and settled in the mid hills of Nepal not far from Kathmandu. They have retained their close cultural ties with their Tibetan roots and their own language. They have historically been one of the most marginalized ethnic groups and sadly, they were among the worst-affected groups by the 2015 earthquake, as many of their communities are situated in areas vulnerable to frequent land movements as well as being cut off from mainstream help and support. The Tamang Heritage Trail was established to bring a source of income to the Tamang people in this area. This is a low level trek so acclimatisation should not be too much of a problem.
